About San Cristobal

San Cristóbal de Las Casas is one of the oldest Spanish settlements in Mexico. Founded in 1528, it is characterized by churches, museums, warm-colored houses with red-tiled roofs, and a beautiful zocalo. Mayan descendants in their native dress are an integral part of the cultural life of the city. Surrounded by forested hills, San Cristóbal de Las Casas lies in the Jovel Valley. The town’s altitude is 7200 feet, and daily temperatures range from 60-80 °F/15-25°C. San Cristóbal de Las Casas feels much smaller in population than it is. Everything is within walking distance of Casa Felipe Flores although taxi service is also available. Chiapas is the southeastern most state of Mexico, and, until the 1800s, was part of Guatemala. Mayan influence is evident everywhere from indiginous artisan markets and holiday celebrations to several of the most important ruin sites in all of Mexico. Most international airlines fly to Mexico City (MEX) where there are connecting flights to Tuxtla Gutierrez (TGZ). Airport transportation can be arranged by Casa Felipe Flores for the one hour drive to San Cristóbal de Las Casas. Taxis and car rental are also available at the airport.
